This article (2007) examined listeners’ perceptions of individuals with Standard American English versus and Asian accent (in this case, Vietnamese). The results showed that listeners (who were American) perceived the Asian speakers to be poorer communicators, weaker in personality, more interested in others, and less threatening than their American counterparts. Again, this study gives proof to the unfortunate fact that foreign-born individuals, who speak English as a second language and with a heavy accent are not viewed as positively by Americans as those who do not have an accent.
