This article, conducted at the University of Chicago in 2007, shows that Americans do not view others who have foreign accents as being as credible or believable as those who do not have foreign accents. This is unfortunate and not fair, for America was founded by immigrants. Perhaps because America is so large and does not share as many boundaries with other countries, Americans have become a bit isolated and expect others to speak like them. Therefore, if someone is difficult to understand, they stand out as different, and not as believable as someone who speaks like they do.
